David Schütz (1941-2017) was a novelist, screenwriter, and producer. Berlin-born Schütz moved to Israel at the age of seven, along with his older brother, as part of the mass youth migration movement (aka ‘Youth Aliyah’). He later studied history and philosophy at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University. In 1978 he published his debut novel, The Grass and the Sand, an autobiographical work that went on to become a bestseller. In the ensuing decades, Schütz carried on writing and publishing books fervently, including I Shall Wait Forever (1987), Avishag (1989), Like a River (1997), and the anthology of short stories The Day of the Cats (2016). His books have won multiple awards and have been translated into many languages, including German and French.
