Director Amnon Rubinstein’s film is based on an original idea by leading man, Avi Toledano. The film follows two parallel plotlines, both set in Spain, albeit 500 years apart.
The first plotline is set in 1992 contemporary Jerusalem. Yoav (Toledano) who works in IT and owns an antique shop sets off for Spain on the trail of a property deed he came into possession of, which apparently belonged to his ancestral family – the distinguished Abarbanels. Along the way, he falls in love with Anna (Yaël Abecassis), a beautiful flight attendant.
The second plotline takes us back to the Spanish Inquisition. The story begins in 1463 Toledo, when a Christian mob crashes the Briss party for Baby Moshe Abarbanel. Sarah, the newborn’s mother, smuggles him out and hides him in the home of a Christian family where Moshe is raised as ‘Regalo,’ with no knowledge of his true Jewish identity. Years later and a fully-grown Regalo (Toledano) is now a highly-adept fencer who works for the Spanish inquisitors. He is sent off on a top-secret espionage mission where he must impersonate a Jew and infiltrate the ranks of the forced convert community (aka ‘anusim’) where he is to investigate whether the converts are still practising their Judaism in secret. Whilst undercover, he falls in love with the beautiful Rachel (Abecassis) and also learns the truth about his Jewish heritage.
The film won three Ophir Awards for Best Cinematography (Yoav Kosh), Best Set Design (Ariel Roshko), and Best Costume Design (Rakefet Levy and Laura Dinolesko).
