Yana’s Friends is a film about fresh-off-the-boat Russian Jewish immigrants who arrive at a strange new world, thrust straight into the heart of Tel Aviv, during the First Gulf War.
Yana is a beautiful, young woman who is also pregnant. Her husband, who walked out on her, has left her to fend for herself in a flatshare with Ellie; a 20-year-old, sexually voracious wedding photographer. When Yana discovers a collection of Ellie’s videotapes, capturing her most intimate moments, she is seething. The war’s first air raid siren is sounded and they both must evacuate to the same safe room. From there, the road to love is quick.
