Mike Burstyn reprises his dual role of Kuni and Muni Lemel (sometimes ‘Leml’) in the third and final instalment of the Kuni Lemel trilogy, following Two Kuni Lemel (aka The Flying Matchmaker) (Israel Becker, 1966) and Kuni Lemel in Tel Aviv (Joel Silberg, 1976). The film was made shortly after Israel’s historic peace treaty with Egypt and is the first-ever Israeli film to have been shot in an Arab state. The film drew around half a million viewers to cinemas.
Kuni Lemel’s elderly grandfather, the rabbi, pledges to bequeath a Torah scroll to the local Jewish community in Cairo in return for a cache of ancient gold coins, dating back thousands of years to the Second Temple period, with an estimated worth of one million dollars. Sassy (Moshe Ivgy), the head of a crime syndicate, gets word of the deal and convinces Kuni’s twin, Muni, to impersonate his brother and steal the priceless artefact for him. Yona (Hana Laszlo), Muni’s partner, also joins the con and dresses up as a young Hassidic man. In the tradition of the ‘Bourekas’ genre [‘lowbrow’ working-class comedies and melodramas], with identity swapping, stealing, and borrowing running rampant – hilarity and trouble inevitably ensue.
