Danny Muggia is an actor, scholar, and film lecturer who studied at the Beit Zvi School for the Performing Arts and later, went on to NYU’s Graduate Film Programme where he earned his master’s degree. Muggia is a former director of the Israel Film Service. He also headed the Film Department at Beit Berl College’s Faculty of Arts (aka ‘HaMidrasha’), and the highly reputable film track at Alon High School in Ramat Hasharon.
In the seventies, Muggia starred in a string of stage productions at Beersheba Theatre and Jerusalem’s Khan Theatre. Israeli children of the 1970s and ‘80s may remember him from the classic programme, Simple Maths (‘heshbon pashut’), an educational maths tutoring series that aired on public broadcaster, Channel One’s educational programming block. In 1986, he also presented the film segment on the cult classic comedy sketch programme, Zehu Ze! (‘that’s that!’).
Highlights of his film credits include Repeat Dive (Shimon Dotan, 1982), Sahara (Andrew V. McLaglen, 1983), The Smile of the Lamb (Shimon Dotan, 1986), Every Time We Say Goodbye (Moshé Mizrahi, 1986), Gloves (Rafi Adar, 1986), and August Snow (Hagai Levi, 1993).
Muggia was local weekly publication, Tel Aviv’s inhouse film critic (part of the Yedioth Ahronoth Group) and in 2003, he published the book How We Loved – 100 Film Masterpieces. Later, he also produced the documentaries Naomi’s Corset (Gérard Allon, 2005), and How Much Love (Kineret Hay-Gillor, 2010).
