Aharon Meskin (1898-1974) was a stage actor and one of the forefathers of Habima National Theatre – a bona fide giant of the stage and a true trailblazing Hebrew theatre-maker in Israel/Palestine. Born in Russia, Meskin was raised religious and studied in a ‘Cheder’ [a traditional Torah and Hebrew-centric Jewish primary school]. As a young man, he joined the Red Army where he served as an officer during the 1917 Communist Revolution. He later studied in Moscow’s Habima Dramatic Studio under the mentorship of legendary director Yevgeny Vakhtangov. In 1919, he officially joined Habima Theatre’s company that was only established five years earlier – it would remain his artistic home for the rest of his life. In 1928, Meskin and his company peers all moved to Palestine.
