Director Isaac Zepel Yeshurun’s film enjoyed both critical acclaim and box office success on its release, and to this day remains a defining watershed moment in 1980s Israeli film. The plot is set in early 1950s Israel, against the backdrop of the deep rift and critical divisions at the heart of the country’s kibbutz movement. In the film, the personal and political collide in the life of a young Tel Avivian teen: Noa, whose parents are both former kibbutzniks on opposite sides of the ideological divide, must choose between staying true to herself (i.e. wearing the clothes that reflect her own style, having an illicit affair) and falling into line with society’s rules and norms.
