Director, Anat Even captures author, S. Yizhar (Yizhar Smilansky’s nom de plume) as he reads out excerpts from his autobiographical novel, Preliminaries, where he waxes nostalgic about his family and the State of Israel’s founding generation whilst at the same time, also taking them to task. Footage of the author is woven into a film montage portraying the Zionist dream and its ultimate ruin – featuring archival footage of Jewish migrant pioneers working the land, alongside more recent scenes of modern-day Israel with its industrialised cities and withering fields in the scorching heat, the farmers and migrant workers working the land, and the homes of indigenous Arabs that were all abandoned during the 1948 War of Independence. The film won the Swiss Visions du Réel award.
