Through her use of archival footage and a range of newsreel and letter excerpts, documentary filmmaker, Michal Aviad turns the spotlight onto a lesser-known, seldom referenced facet of the Zionist enterprise – the female side. In her 2013 film, The Women Pioneers, Aviad follows the story of those trailblazing Jewish women at the turn of the 20th century who had set out to revive and reinvigorate Palestine’s Jewish population and settled in kibbutz Ein Harod. Their hope was to build a new world and, in the process, mould a new, modern woman – one who is independent, equal to her male peers, and freed from the shackles and constraints of religion and tradition.
