Rami Danon (1943-2019) was a playwright, stage director, and theatre, TV, and film actor. Danon was born in Morocco and moved to Israel with his family at the age of six. He studied theatre under Nola Chelton and later, also at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Theatre. Danon was a fixture on just about every Israeli repertoire theatre stage including Habima National Theatre, Beit Lessin, Haifa Theatre, Beersheba Theatre, and Jerusalem’s Khan theatre – of which he was a founding member.
Danon wrote and directed many successful plays. He both directed and performed in Masked (1990) which he co-wrote with Ilan Hatzor. Masked took home the Best Play award at the Acco Festival of Alternative Israeli Theatre and was later performed upwards of 200 times as part of the Cameri Theatre’s repertoire. The latter was also home to two of Danon’s subsequent plays which he co-wrote with Amnon Levi: Midnight Tikkun (1996) and Father’s Braid (2003).
Danon earned a great deal of praise for his performance in Ram Loevy’s 1986 TV movie, Bread. Highlights of his other screen acting credits include Beyond the Walls (Uri Barbash, 1984), and The Smile of the Lamb (Shimon Dotan, 1986) – each of which won him a Best Supporting Actor Award from the Israeli Film Academy; The Day we Met (Sam Firstenberg, 1990), Doomsday (aka Freedom: The Voice of Ein Harod) (Doron Eran, 1990), Beyond the Walls II (Uri Barbash, 1992), Newland (Orna Ben-Dor Niv), Live and Become (Radu Mihaileanu, 2005), Restoration (Yossi Madmoni, 2011), and Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabetz and Shlomi Elkabetz, 2014). Danon has also appeared in a host of TV series including Sweet Dreams, 101, and Scarred, to name but a few.
Danon was married to fellow actor, Tchia Danon, and was the father of actors Chen Danon-Zax and Hagar Danon.
