David Bergman (1931-2018) was a theatre and documentary film director. Bergman was born in Paris and spent the Holocaust hiding out in a village under an assumed, Christian identity. As an adult, after moving to Israel, he became commander of the IDF’s music ensemble, Lehakat Hanachal (The Nachal Group) and a theatre director. Between 1972-1981, Bergman also ran the Beit Zvi School for the Performing Arts. In the 1970s, he teamed up with Haim Gouri and Jacques (aka Jacqo) Ehrlich to make a film trilogy about Holocaust survivors: The 81st Blow (1974) that was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary category, The Last Sea (1979), and Flames in the Ashes (1985).
