Seven days since the death of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, a memorial service is held by his grave on Mount Herzl in the presence of the widow Miriam, President of Israel Zalman Shazar, Speaker of the Knesset Kadish Luz, Defence Minister Moshe Dayan, Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Haim Bar Lev, and others. Chief Military Rabbi Major General Shlomo Goren officiates the ceremony.
After the mourning week elapses, President Shazar meets with leaders of the various Knesset coalition factions to hear their recommendations for Eshkols replacement. At his official residence in Jerusalem, the president converses with party representatives of the Alignment, Gahal, Mafdal (National Religious Party), and the Independent Liberals, that consent to the appointment of Knesset Member Golda Meir as Prime Minister.
Upon the parties permission being granted, Meir comes to the Presidents House to receive her commission.
