President Zalman Shazar opens the eighth Maccabiah Games Opening Ceremony at Ramat Gan Stadium with the participation of athletes from 26 countries. In the opening parade, the torchbearer Amnon Avidan carries the torch as he runs in the stadium and lights the flame. Pigeons are released to the air, and the opening ceremony ends with teenagers performing a demonstration of gymnastic exercises and flying balloons. The following day, the various competitions begin with fencing, freestyle wrestling, and women and mens swimming races. In the mens race, the renowned American swimmer Mark Spitz competes, and of course wins a gold medal in the race. On the first day of the Maccabiah, four Maccabiah records and three Israeli records are broken.
