An excerpt from When the People Willingly Offer Themselves, a Minhal Ha’hasbara documentary, marking the tenth anniversary of the Jewish Brigade’s fighting in World War II.
Shortly before the end of World War II, the British government approves the establishment of a Jewish Infantry Brigade Group that will serve in the British Army. Thousands of men from the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine volunteer to the Brigade and are sent to the Italian front. The excerpt documents the commander of the Italian front, Field Marshall Harold Alexander, as he reviews the Brigades lined up troops. The visit of Moshe Shertok, the secretary of the Jewish Agencys political department, is documented as well. In the Brigades base in Brisighella, Italy, Shertok addresses the troops with his Flag Speech. He is followed by the Brigades commander, Brigadier Ernest Benjamin. At the end of the ceremony and for the first time since the Brigades establishment, its troops raise a Jewish flag.
