On June 15, 1953, South African Prime Minister Daniel François Malan arrived at Lod Airport, becoming the first foreign head of state to visit Israel. During a visit that lasted three days, Malan and his wife, along with four of his aides, met with Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and toured various locations across the country. Malan and his entourage visited Christian holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem, the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, Bethlehem, and Capernaum, as well as the moshav “Habonim,” where many of the founders immigrated from South Africa. Before returning to his country, Malan gave interviews to Israeli newspapers.
