Filmmaker Daniel Wachsmann’s mockumentary focuses on the effort to bridge cultural and ideological divides via the medium of art. This is the story of Azam, a Palestinian theatre director currently working on an autobiographical play about the love story between his grandmother – an Arab singer, and granddad – a Jewish doctor – in the final days of British Mandatory rule of Palestine. Through their story, he aims to portray his own personal trauma, which is also, for all intents and purposes, a national one.
Azam decides to experiment with a bit of role reversal in that he casts Jewish actors in the Arab roles, and vice versa. However, already at rehearsals the production proves extremely contentious amongst Jews and Arabs alike – and ultimately never makes it to stage.
Wachsmann plays himself in the film, taking on the role of the documentary director and in doing so, further blurring the line between fact and fiction.
