Dan Wolman’s 2017 film is a story of love at first sight, set in the nascent days of the Israeli state – a big screen adaptation of the hit monodrama of the same title, written and directed by playwright Pnina Gary. The monodrama follows the life story of Garrie: from her youth in the village (moshav) of Nahalal just before the establishing of the Jewish state, through her dreams of a life in the theatre world, to a chance encounter with Eli – the Palmach resistance fighter and son of future Israeli president, Yitzhak Ben Zvi – which sparks a passionate romance that ends in tragedy just before the couple’s impending nuptials, when Eli dies in combat. This is also the story of Israeli life in the country’s earliest days; a reality that demanded Israelis make a choice between the individual and the collective, and between self and the group, ultimately setting the scene for heartrending conclusions to many a love story.
