The second part of Dan Verete’s film title reads: Three Desert Stories. The film is made up of three shorts; all of which are set against the backdrop of the Judaean Desert’s breathtaking vistas. All three short films explore themes of man vs. nature, progress vs. tradition, and centre vs. fringe. All characters in all three narratives embody the tension between Orient and Occident, and between the world of yesteryear and modern times: two lorry drivers who run over a Bedouin boy; Tatjana, who is trying to end things with her husband; and especially, Abed, the foreman who is torn between the pull of modernity and his tribe’s traditions. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Cologne Mediterranean Film Festival in Germany and took home the Best Film award at the Haifa International Film Festival.
