Director Avi Nesher’s acclaimed film tells the story of the brilliant Naomi (Ania Bukstein) – daughter of an esteemed rabi who has got engaged to a religious scholar whom she does not love. After asking to postpone the wedding, Naomi enrols at a college in the northern town of Safed. There, she meets Michelle (Michal Shtamler) a rebellious young woman who was shipped off to school by her parents on account of ‘inappropriate behaviour,’ and Anouk (Fanny Ardant) – an older Frenchwoman who moves in next door to the college after having spent 15 years in prison for murder. These new friendships completely upend Naomi’s understanding of reality. She starts asking herself questions about women’s role in the ultraorthodox world and is gradually drawn to the forbidden secular world, surrendering herself to her thoughts, urges, and desires.
