In this 1988 big screen satire, director Haim Bouzaglo takes on an individual and social identity crisis. The film follows the story of Eldad (Shlomo Bar-Aba) – an Arabic teacher who, at the end of his military reserve duty service is due to fly to the States; however, at the very last minute he decides not to get on the airport shuttle bus from departures to the aircraft, and instead sneaks out of the terminal and starts a new life in a small, Tel Aviv hotel. The hotel receptionist mistakes him for a rich American Jew, believing that her get-out-of-Israel ticket has just walked through the door. Meanwhile, Eldad assumes another primary identity; this time, of a Gazan construction worker. Through this newfound ‘alien’ point of view, he is given an amusing and at times, dark perspective of the place he calls home.
Fictitious Marriage took home six Silver Lamp awards, winning Best Film, Director, Editing, Cinematography, Male Lead, and Supporting Actress categories.
