Ofra Haza stars in George Obadiah’s 1979 as Vered – a young, orphaned blind woman with the voice of angel who makes a living as a travelling peddler, offering cigarettes and sweets to passersby. One day, whilst hawking her goods around the Old City of Jaffa, she meets three useless yet kindhearted young men who decide to take her under their wing, bring her home, and help her out. The trio will do whatever it takes to help her raise the money she needs to undergo a revolutionary medical procedure that will restore her eyesight, thereby paving the road for her to embark on a successful singing career. West Side Girl, which was Ofra Haza’s second major film role following her debut in Assi Dayan’s The Hit was one of the biggest box office hits of the period. The film’s theme song, Like a Bird, that was later included in Haza’s album, About our Loves (‘al ahavot shelanu’), also made a huge splash in the charts.
