Director Tzipi Trope’s film is set in Tel Aviv, on the eve of the founding of the State of Israel. At the heart of the story is Benjamin (Shmuel Vilozni), a Holocaust survivor haunted by his traumatic past. He meets Leah (Rivka Neuman) who had fled Poland before the war, and the two wed. Benjamin struggles to adapt to life in Israel and attempts to recreate his old Berlin life, when he was living in his parents’ home. To that end, he furnishes their home accordingly and such is the tradition he wishes to establish with his new family.
Benjamin’s behaviour puts a wedge between himself and his family. He then falls in love with Gosti (Anat Harpaz), a fellow Holocaust survivor. But his world is rocked to its core when he spots Yaakov Miller (Yosef Carmon), whom he recognises as the Kapo from the concentration camp he was imprisoned in. Benjamin then goes out and buys a gun, set on killing his old tormentor.
The film won five Silver Lantern Awards (the Ophir Awards’ predecessors), taking home the trophy for Best Film, Screenplay, Actress in a Leading Role (Rivka Neuman), Supporting Actor (Yosef Carmon), and Set Design (Eli Landau). It was featured in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival, and showcased in countless other festivals worldwide, including Montreal, Hamburg, and London.
