Gabriel D’Angelo wakes up from a nightmare to learn that Naama, the young woman he loves and who was raised religious, has vanished. He makes his way to Jerusalem, intent on finding her. In the course of his journey, he comes to know the local Judeo-Italian community to which his family belongs, whilst mainly befriending Alexandra – Naama’s closest friend who is trying to help him find her. Though rough around the edges in parts, Hagai Levi’s acute attention to cinematic style and detail nonetheless shines bright here, in his directorial debut; this, in no small part thanks to the craft and skill of cinematographer, Jorge Gurvich who manages to breathe life into the most powerful imagery, onscreen. Levi here already showcases nascent glimpses of all the elements that will later becomes staples of his hugely successful career (the highlights of which include TV series such us In Therapy, The Affair, and The Accursed,) mainly in the form of channelling the drama into his protagonists’ inner lives and emotions, and by demonstrating the sheer force and impact of human interactions.
