Director Nir Begman’s debut feature follows a northern Israeli family as it struggles to come to terms with the father’s death. For Daphna and her four kids, their efforts to pick up the pieces and get on with their lives are proving challenging at best. Each of them must face the outside world whilst dealing with complicated, inner family dynamics at the same time, not to mention the gaping hole left by the loss of their father and partner. The film was a huge success both locally and internationally, taking home multiple awards: a total of nine Ophir Awards including Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Director, as well as a nod to leading lady, Orly Silbersatz who won Best Lead Actress, and Maya Maron who took home the Best Supporting Actress award. The film also clinched the Jerusalem Film Festival’s Wolgin Prize, and the top prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Broken Wings was additionally featured in the Panorama section at the Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Panorama Audience Award, and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. The film’s tremendous success in Israel triggered a wave of introspective, family-centric films; all of which echoed similar motifs to Bergman’s in Broken Wings, e.g. the dead or MIA patriarch for instance, and the stranded car.
