“The boy’s 31, he has a hole in his heart,” late singer and creator Gabriel Belhassen, a founding member of legendary Israeli rock band Algiers (that would eventually break up over Belhassen’s declining mental health), tells the camera. Director Ofir Trainin’s film is a musical documentary that follows Belhassen following his release from Israel’s notorious Abarbanel Mental Health Centre, and throughout his efforts to record a solo album. The result is a revealing intimate portrait of an artist facing up to his demons, fears, and mental health – chiefly his bipolar disorder with which he’d been living – en route to realising his artistic vision.
Wandering Eyes won Best Film at the Docaviv International Documentary Film Festival, as well as awards for Best Music and Best Debut from the Israeli Documentary Filmmakers’ Forum.
