Noah Sokolowsky directed the documentary film, Life of the Jews of Palestine (1913); the first ever feature-length film to have been shot in the land. The film chronicles the journey undertaken by a group of Jewish pioneers from Odessa to Palestine, and the bourgeoning Jewish communities in the land, including footage of Tel Aviv, the historic Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium high school in the city, and a host of the period’s most high-profile figures including Joseph Trumpeldor and poet laureate, Rachel. The film was shown at the 11th Zionist Congress in Vienna and was thought to have been lost for the next 80 years; that is, until a surviving copy had surfaced in France in 1998 and subsequently restored by the Jerusalem Cinematheque, in association with the CNC French Film Archives.
