This extraordinary look at the lives of the pioneering Jews who had come to Israel during the first and second waves of mass immigration (Aliyah) is finally seeing the light in this film, originally commissioned by Noah Sokolovsky and the Mizrah Company, and made in Odessa ahead of the 11th Zionist Congress in Vienna.
Filming took place in Palestine in the spring of 1913, documenting both old and new Jewish communities in Judea, the Lowlands, and the Galilee. The film was well-received in Europe following its opening on the cusp of World War I, only to vanish without a trace after The War. It only resurfaced in 1997 in Paris when documentary director and Hebrew film scholar, Jacob Gross unearthed it. Conservation and restoration works on the film were done in association with the Israeli Film Archive at the Jerusalem Cinematheque.
