Radu Mihaileanu is a Romanian-born, French-Jewish screenwriter and director. Mihaileanu fled communist Romania in 1980, immigrating to France where he studied film. His debut feature film, Trahir (1993), won first prize at the Montréal World Film Festival. In 1998, he directed Train of Life, a film which attempts to tackle the Holocaust with some elements of humour. As it came out about the same time as Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful (1997) which also attempted a tragicomic exploration of the Holocaust, Mihaileanu’s film failed to make as lasting a global impression; this despite having been shown at dozens of festivals worldwide and winning scores of awards, including the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
His film, Live and Become (2005) is a French-Israeli coproduction featuring the story of a young Ethiopian boy who gets adopted by an Israeli family. The film was shown at many international festivals, winning multiple awards, including Best Original Screenplay at the César Awards. It was also featured in the Panorama section at the Berlin International Film Festival where it took home three awards, including the Panorama Audience Award. Highlights of his other credits include The Concert (2009), The Source (2011), and The History of Love (2016).
