The film Project Renewal, produced by the United Jewish Appeal, presents the neighborhood rehabilitation project announced by the Israeli government headed by Menachem Begin, in which distressed areas in Israel were restored. With the establishment of the state, the population of Israel almost doubled and for this purpose absorption and aliyah, camps were built in order to accommodate the stream of Jews immigrating to Israel. These transit camps eventually became neighborhoods where thousands of families with many children lived in difficult social conditions and without adequate housing. as a result, there was an increase in the level of crime, and poverty became a national problem. The film, produced, directed, and written by Herbert Dorfman, brings the voices of the residents living in the distressed neighborhoods of Musrara, Ir Ganim, Amishav, and the Hatikva neighborhood, telling of their feelings about the steps the state is taking in finding a solution to the problem. The program emphasizes the construction and rehabilitation of residential areas in the neighborhood but also included social educational programs aimed at improving the standard of living and enabling families to get out of the cycle of poverty.
