This film documents Gadi Castel’s journey to the ghetto of Venice, where he grew up, after thirty years. The film ranges between stories about the history of the community, observation of the dismal state of the community at the time of the making of the film, and Castel’s feelings during the revisit to his childhood city. While in the middle there are photographs of the city, important paintings, and documentation of the Jewish life that remains in the ghetto.
At the end of the film, the creator says: “The past is dead, all that remains of it are tombstones – beautiful, wonderful, spectacular tombstones – but only tombstones. Even my visit, and this film, are nothing more than a tombstone. A tombstone in honor of the oldest ghetto in the world, the ghetto of the Jews of Venice.”
