A film produced by the Israeli Film Service on the centenary of the death of painter Maurycy Gottlieb.
A portrait by Maurycy Gottlieb, describing his fiancee Laura Rosenfeld, finds its way to the hands of Rosenfeld’s Israeli granddaughter years later, and casts a light on the Jewish-Polish painter’s short and turbulent life.
Born 1856 in Drohobycz, Galicia, Gottlieb showed a special gift for painting from a young age. He started studying arts in Vienna at the age of 15, until he fell in love with the works of Jan Matejko and left for Krakow, to become his student. Afterward, he traveled Europe between his hometown, Vienna, Munich, Rome, Venice and Krakow, where he died in the year 1879, aged 23.
The love story of the painter and his fiancee Laura Rosenfeld, which ended with Rosenfeld breaking up with him before they married, is reflected in the letters they exchanged during Gottlieb’s travels. In his paintings, of which several hundred remained, Gottlieb embedded references to his lover and his family, signs of the conflict underlying his Jewish-Polish identity, and also a morbid hint which provokes questions regarding his death.
