Deep in Israel’s south are the Timna Cpper Mines, where thousands are employed. The film presents the activity of miners in the depths, as well as something of their family life. The Timna mines are simultaneously an important economic resource for the State of Israel, and a launching pad for laborers seeking to fulfill dreams of family life, house ownership and stability. The meeting of man and mine produces several interesting images: Miners descending in a funicular resembling a roller coater reach out to kiss a mezuza at the mine’s entrance. A coffee break in the depths requires the use of and electric water heater which burns the fingers of one miner, a miniscule instance of bodily damage in anenvironment that cries mortal danger. In beween appears Eilat of the Seventies in all its modest charm.
