The first International Bible Contest is held on the Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in the presence of Christian and Jewish religious leaders, members of the government, and many guests. President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi and his wife Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi are present as are Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, Teddy Kollek and Yitzhak Navon. Judge Schneor Zalman Cheshin heads the judiciary panel and manages the contest. Among the contenders are Israeli representative Amos Hakham, as well as representatives from Mexico, Finland, Italy, South Africa, and the United States. At the end of the competition, Amos Hakham is declared winner. In second place comes French representative Simone Dumont, and in third place: Brazils Irena Santos. This contest, organized in the frame of Israels 10th anniversary celebration, served as inspiration for the international bible contest for youth, a tradition that is to later develop.
