Flags in Israel were lowered to half-mast as a mourning sign for the hanging of the Baghdad Jews. A solidarity gathering is held at a synagogue in Ramat Gan. Twelve Jews from Baghdad and Basra were arrested by Iraqi authorities for allegedly spying for Israel. Nine were hanged, and three others remain arrested and will be hanged in August 1969. This event has taken place against the backdrop of persecution of Jews in Iraq since the Baath party took control of Iraq, and the Six Day War.
