Interview with Professor Raanan Weitz, one of the leaders of settlement in the State of Israel and head of the training center for settlement research in Rehovot, regarding the evacuation of the Yamit area—the main region of Israeli civilian settlement in Sinai—and its return as part of the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. Weitz addresses the problematic aspects, in his view, of the withdrawal from the Yamit area, which serves as a “security strip” along the border between Israel and Egypt. He states that careful consideration is needed on how to wisely and effectively exchange territories within the framework of the agreement, in a way that will allow for the maintenance of Israel’s security both along the border with Egypt and in the Jordan Valley and the Green Line, while taking into account the possibility of recognizing the sovereignty of the Arab residents in the West Bank area.
