The lowest nature reserve in the world, a 200-million-year-old geological museum, an international resort for birds, vulture feeding stations, and the challenges of desert survival – these are only some of the topics discussed in this series of videos about nature conservation in Israel, produced by the Israeli Film Service. The first short film in the series focuses on the nature reserve at the oasis of Ein Gedi, the existence of which was made possible thanks to the combination of a desert climate and plentiful water supply throughout the year; it’s been dubbed “Israel’s first field laboratory”, since methods of nature conservation were tested there. The next video explores the history of the Ramon Crater, and specifically, the forming of its unique, colorful rock formations. Later, the series also touches on the return of Biblical animals to Israel – thanks to conservation efforts and transplanting of select species from abroad, the Nature Reserve Authority has managed to create core breeding groups of animals once prevalent in Israel which have since gone extinct, such as fallow deer, wild sheep and wild goats. The following videos also focus on animal conservation, starting with the Hula Nature Reserve, a “wayside inn” for a wide range of migrating birds from Europe and Africa, and ending on the successful conservation of Israel’s vulture population, which had dwindled due to food scarcity and uncontrolled use of pesticides. The final video in the series presents the challenges of surviving the difficult conditions of the arid Negev Desert, which serves as a training ground for Israel’s Society for the Protection of Nature, where scouts go to see wildlife, navigate the terrain and identify rock formations.
