Ilan Shaul’s short, which he made as a student at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Film and Television Studies, explores two Israeli soldiers’ moral collapse brought on by the occupation. The film follows two bored reservists in an Arab village. They go to a restaurant, have a meal and leave without paying; the restaurateur then goes after them and confronts the pair. In response, they tie him up and throw him in a disused well. Their laughter as they go about committing this violent, degrading act casts this profoundly unsettling short as a true ‘odd duck’ in the landscape of films attempting to tackle the occupation and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at the time.
