Director Tvika Binder’s entertaining and at times, unsettling film, starts with his discovery that his father – a lorry driver from a sleepy suburb outside Tel Aviv – is a member of the “dubious club” (as the director puts it) of online ‘reply guys’ [aka ‘talkbackers’ in Hebrew]. As he delves deeper into his father’s newfound pastime, Binder also starts to explore the online comment section and its most ardent users as a social phenomenon: is there truth to the stereotype that online ‘reply guys’ are indeed all a bunch of mouth-frothing, short-tempered dimwits, addicted to the sound of their own ‘hot takes’ – or are they, in fact, latter day prophets standing in the middle of the new proverbial town square, shaping public opinion?
