In the mid-1970s, the whole of Tel Aviv was rocked when prominent director, actor, and comedian Uri Zohar who had been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and bohemian scene, along with wife, Elia renounced their staunchly secular lifestyle, becoming ultraorthodox and moving to Jerusalem. They were joined by Alona Einstein, singer and actor Arik Einstein’s then-wife. In 1985, the two couples’ children were wed; Ephraim, Elia and Uri’s son married Shiri, Alona and Arik’s daughter. Director Renen Schorr was there to document the eve of the wedding; the (somewhat frosty) reunion between Arik and Uri – both of whom were Israeli cultural pioneers for while – and to add some extra seasoning to the otherwise prim and proper Jewish ultraorthodox wedding with images from the couples’ shared secular past. Schorr observes this family celebration with curiosity, tinged with a slight air of grief and melancholy.
