In a prison where both Jewish and Palestinian inmates are held, Uri, serving a sentence for a robbery he committed, and Issam, who was convicted of security offenses, are forced to cooperate in their joint struggle against the harsh administration and guards – and together they organize a strike.
The prison serves as a microcosm of Israeli society, and the connection between prisoners of the two nationalities creates a sharp commentary on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
The film by Uri Barbash, whose screenplay he wrote with his brother Benny Barbash and Eran Preis, brought about 600,000 viewers to cinemas, won the Critics’ Prize at the Venice Film Festival, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
In 1992 the Barbash brothers created a sequel, Beyond the Walls 2, but they were unable to replicate the success of the original.
Singer Boaz Sharabi, who plays one of the inmates, performs the film’s theme song “Tni Li Yad” (“Give Me Your Hand”), which became a major hit.
