Menahem Golan’s blockbusting detective comedy (an adaptation of a stage play he’d previously directed for local theatre) drew nearly half a million people to cinemas all over the country. To this day, the late Edna Fliedel who played the titular role, remains synonymous with her fictional alter ego – Aliza Mizrahi – a cleaning lady in Tel Aviv’s Shalom Tower [Israel’s first-ever skyscraper] – a local Miss Marple, if you will – and the only one who is able to solve a series of unexplained murders that have left the police at their wit’s end.
