In Hebrew crime vernacular, the term ‘red hood’ (‘kipa aduma’) refers to a surprise assassination at a presumed friendly encounter with a close acquaintance. Director Arnon Zadok’s crime thriller explores the deep-seated hostilities between Israel’s duelling Moroccan and Russian mafias. Zeev Aboutboul (Aviv Alush) returns to Israel after having spent six years in a Moldovan prison, over a drug deal gone wrong. To make up for his narcotic fiasco, his boss, Victor (Jonathan Cherchi) orders Aboutboul to take out Maximoff, head of the Russian mafia.
Aboutboul starts planning the hit and recruits Katja for the job, who had moved to Israel from Russia as a child with her father and grandmother, and lived in abject poverty – until Maximoff had them both killed. Now, this is her chance to finally have her revenge. In the fairytale metaphor, with Aboutboul cast as the wolf and Katja, as red riding hood, the two soon find themselves caught in a whirlwind of passion and violence – in the course of which they fall in love – but is love powerful enough to do away with the underworld’s entire system of codes, rules, and orders?
