This was director, Zeev Havatzelet’s only film as he tragically perished in an accident on the eve of its premiere. What a Gang is a film adaptation of the bestselling novel by Israel Wisler (aka, Pucho). A group of Jewish Resistance combat soldiers having their training in a kibbutz are joined by a city youth who has run away from his compulsive, widowed mother. Yosinyu, Yoskeh, Yossi, and Yossele, along with a group of local girls, get themselves in a series of military underground adventures, complete with the most hilarious pranks of the day. “With this film, Israeli Cinema took a huge step closer towards admittance into the international film art arena, with distinct Italian neo-realism influences, adapted to Israeli reality by Ze’ev Havatzelet, an artist and visionary who was trained by the very best of his peers.” (R. Ezaria, Maariv.)
