Haim Weiss leaves Jaffa with his two girls in the fall of 1935, and settles in a moshava in the centre of the country. Weiss, a merchant, born into a wealthy merchant family from Poland, invests his money in orchards and plans his future as a farmer. His relationship with Bracha, his sickly wife, has its ups-and-downs and extreme mood swings, and he oscillates between animosity and pity toward her. His daughters are 25-year-old Riva, quiet and apparently submissive, and Bat-Sheva, two years her junior, a rebellious girl who conceals her feelings by cynical, at times blunt, behavior. Their complex relations with their father, become more base, difficult and at times painful after their mother’s death.
“After the Holidays” spins the tale of four years in the Weiss family after settling in the moshava. It depicts the conflicting, at times cruel, world of a family, whose interrelations and relations with its surroundings force its members to resign themselves to a life of loneliness and alienation.
