Eytan Fox’s hit drama thriller whose script was penned by his spouse and longtime collaborator, Gal Uchovsky, was the film that kicked off that year’s Berlin International Film Festival, earning rave reviews from critics and viewers alike.
Eyal (Lior Ashkenazi), a stone-cold Mossad hitman who is also the child of Holocaust survivors is the epitome of Israeli machismo, with his introverted tough guy persona. When his handler tasks him with apprehending a Nazi fugitive by the name of Alfed Himmelmann, Eyal pretends to be a tour guide who accompanies Himmelmann’s grandson, Axel (Knut Berger), who has come to Israel to visit his sister, Pia (Caroline Peters), who has been volunteering in a kibbutz. All the while, the Second Intifada rages in the background with terrorist attacks happening left, right, and centre.
The closer Eyal becomes with Axel and Pia, the more chinks appear in his armour. Being around the two siblings, the German language, and especially the openly gay Axel forces Eyal to confront some long-buried questions and fears. Along the way, the film explores the trauma and post trauma of the Holocaust, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and homosexuality.
Walk on Water was featured at countless festivals around the world, including Cannes and Toronto. It was also commercially released in multiple territories worldwide, making it one of the most successful Israeli films of all time.
