In Waltz with Bashir, director Ari Folman sets out to solve a missing piece of the puzzle that is the memory of September 1982’s Sabra and Shatila three-day massacre in Lebanon. Folman who, at the time was a young soldier under state-mandatory conscription recreates those wartime days and in the process, gives rise to a novel film genre – the animated documentary in which memory breaks out of the realms of oral recounting and is transformed into a range of new imagery. Folman’s journey takes him through a reunion with a childhood friend in snowy Holland and Haifa’s early 1980s club scene, as it gradually homes in on a surreal, war-torn Beirut. The stunning imagery, the free movement, and the ability to infuse the documentary with the momentum and forward thrust of fiction whilst boldly staring into the bare soul of individual and collective trauma, all make Waltz with Bashir a truly unparalleled cinematic feat.
