A documentary exploring the making of multimedia art through interviews with artists Raffi Lavie, Moshe Gershuni, and Ran Shechori – all of whom had taken to employing ‘unorthodox’ artistic elements such as photography, film, and music in their works. For these three artists, turning to these novel artistic tools enabled them to reflect and represent the period they live in, and to explore concepts such as time and speed in previously inconceivable ways.
Lavie describes how he’s begun using still images in his paintings in an attempt to incorporate his immediate surroundings into his art – what is more, he argues that a work of art is meant to bring its spectators into the experience, as opposed to boasting the artist’s so-called technical prowess. Gershuni discusses his works, Intersecting and Particles, and elaborates on the interest he has taken in making the spectators part of the piece itself. Finally, Shechori introduces his 1970 video art piece, Yozhik, where he tried to challenge and undermine film aesthetics.
Multimedia, Multimedia, Multimedia was produced with the help of experimental artist and cultural figure Joav BarEl who served as a consultant on the film. Between 1971-1972, BarEl developed and created a series of films for Channel 1, along with filmmaker and avantgarde artist Jacques Katmor and cinematographer Amnon Solomon. Their films were steeped in the art and critical thinking of their time, focusing on a range of working artists (male and female) and their artistic oeuvre.
