A documentary exploring environmental art in Israel. At the heart of the film is the work of artists Buky Schwartz, Yitzhak Danziger who had previously been Schwartz’s teacher, and architect Elisha Gat. The film features interviews with the artists, as well as footage of their works. In the film, Schwartz shares his musings on environmental sculpting and its ability to create an additional wholesome environment within an existing one, with its own novel internal and external structure. Gat describes the relationship between architecture and sculpting in the planning of Israel’s built-up areas; he discusses the ways that art can transform virtually any built-up area, and also explores the relationship between architecture and landscape in Israel. Finally, Danziger addresses the climate crisis and discusses his 1971 work, The Rehabilitation of the Nesher Quarry.
The film features footage of urban and natural landscapes as well as a range of new-build schemes by architectures Zvi Hecker, Al Mansfeld and Dora Gad, Frederick John Kiesler, Armand Phillip Bartos, and others.
Man, Sculpture, Environment was produced with the help of experimental artist and cultural figure Joav BarEl who served as a consultant on the film. Between 1971-1972, BarEl developed and created a series of films for Channel 1, along with filmmaker and avantgarde artist Jacques Katmor and cinematographer Amnon Solomon. Their films were steeped in the art and critical thinking of their time, focusing on a range of working artists (male and female) and their artistic oeuvre.
