Three seemingly unrelated stories are woven together into one, greater existential mosaic that is Israel personified – with all the loneliness, intimacy, and alienation it harbours. The plot moves between Tel Aviv and Wadi Araba (aka ‘Aravah’) in the South of Israel, and the lives and stories of a prostitute, mobster, former police officer, southern farmer, Filipino carer, and Thai worker. What a Wonderful Place won the Special Prize of the Jury at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, whilst the Best Actor award went to Uri Gavriel. Back in Israel, the film took home five Ophir awards, winning both Best Film and Best Screenplay categories. Gavriel meanwhile, got to take home top honours yet again for his role, winning the Best Lead Actor award.
