Avi Nesher’s box office hit which, on its release, drew more than 470,000 filmgoers to cinemas, follows the daily lives of an immigrant community in a small, industrial town at Israel’s southern Negev region towards the end of the 1960s. Following a string of broken promises about being given accommodation in the centre of Israel, an Indian immigrant family find themselves in a nowhere desert town where the population is predominantly Jewish Moroccan. Tensions soon flare up between the immigrant communities’ clashing cultures: the Moroccans, who consider themselves French, look down on the Indians whilst the Indians, who consider themselves British, are equally as dismissive of the Moroccans. In the midst of it all, a friendship is struck up between Indian teen, Sarah, and her Moroccan peer, Nicole. The pair bond around adolescence, the endless questions it presents, and the many urges and desires it can overwhelm one with. Turn Left at the End of the World was shown at many festivals round the world, taking home the Audience Choice award at the Taormina International Film Festival, and the Jury Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Back in Israel, the film also won two Ophir awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
